| Possible reasons may be either with the baby itself
or the mother. In the former case, it is perhaps
because the baby was born very small or handicapped,
or the babys mouth muscles are too weak to
suck well. If this is the case, the cause must be
checked by a doctor and appropriate corrective action
must be taken. Therefore this is not the case about
which a mother can be worried. In the latter case,
the cause is often the mothers breast: a flat
breast, an inverted nipple, etc. It is said that
more and more women have inverted nipples probably
because they started wearing a bra at a tender age
of 10 years old or ocassionally wearing their bra
to sleep. They use a tight bra which may help form
large breasts but with flat tops. A nipple of such
breasts is often inverted and hardly caught by the
babys tiny mouth. In this case, perhaps a
breast shield is useful when giving breast milk.
Sometimes a baby cannot suck well because the breast
is full of milk. In this case, before nursing, squeeze
a small amount of milk with the hand, or warm and
soften the nipple with a hot wet towel, which will
help milk to come out. If you use a breast shield,
it is recommended to warm the nipple well with a
hot wet towel before using. Some mothers breast-feed
well by putting some breast milk into a breast shield
with the hand before letting the baby suck the nipple. |
