| When a mothers
nipples are flat, depressed (larvate depressed,
true depressed) or oversized, the baby may not suck
the breast easily. When the nipple is undersized,
the baby may not be able to suck at all. If your
nipples are undersized, oversized, flat or larvate
depressed, we recommend the following: |
| |
- Nipple massage
Hold your nipple, pull
it out, and then massage it.
- Massage using a nipple puller
Aspirate
the nipple a little at a time, by lightly compressing
the ball attached to the puller.
|
These massages are effective if practiced 2 or 3
times each morning, afternoon and evening.
A nipple shield may also help baby to suck well.
Warm the breast with a hot wet towel before using
the nipple shield. The forms of abnormal nipples
differ with mothers, but many can be corrected by
making the baby suck as often as possible. An effective
method can be to pull out a nipple with a nipple
puller before nursing and make the baby suck it
immediately. |
